Quick answer: Most healthy adults with enough jawbone and healthy gums can be considered for implants, but only an exam with X-rays or a 3D scan can decide. Overall health matters more than age. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, untreated gum disease and some medications can affect healing and planning.
Only an exam — usually including X-rays or a 3D scan — can determine whether implants are an option for you. In general, sources such as the ADA and FDA describe these factors:
- Overall health matters more than age. You may be medically evaluated before surgery.
- Chronic conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes may interfere with healing.
- Tobacco use can slow healing and reduce long-term success.
- Gum health – untreated periodontal (gum) disease is a risk factor and usually needs treatment first.
- Enough jawbone to support the implant; if not, a bone graft may be discussed.
- Commitment to home care and regular dental visits.
Tell your dentist about all medications and health conditions; some (for example certain bone medications) can affect treatment planning.
